The Icelandic Yule Lads
Sheep cote Clod
Arrives to town
Sheep cote Clod, Stekkjastaur (icelandic) is the name of the Yule Lad who comes first to a town, and he arrives on December 12th. He is the first according to the order published in Jón Árnason’s Þjóðsogam from 1862.
Sheep cote Clod was said to suck milk from sheep. He had stiff legs on both feet, so it was quite difficult to walk.
Stekkur was a special type of sheep pen, and that is where Sheep Cote Clod, Stekkjarstaur, got its name.

Sheep-Cote Clod was the first,
Stiff like a tree.
He snuck into the stables,
And fooled the farmer’s sheep.
He wanted to suck milk from them,
– They did not care for that,
And because he had peg-legs
– It did not go too well.

On the occasion of the Yule Lads Workshop opening an online store, the brothers requested that some of the products that will be sold at the Workshop be dedicated to the brothers. Here are some of the products that are dedicated to Stekkjastaur. Great products for parents to help the Yule Lads to add something nice in the shoes that children have put in the windows.
